Hi everyone, I'm Ruth!

My name is: Ruth
My pronouns are: she/her
I’m located in: Ipswich, UK

I’ve had EDS most of my life, but I wasn’t diagnosed until my mid-20’s. In my late 20’s I had an epic health crash which led to me being bed-bound for over a month and getting signed off work - the last 15 years have been a process of recovering from that and learning how to live with EDS.

It’s been quite the journey, and for me physical activity has been the main thing that has enabled me to regain control of my life and life with my bendy joints and wonky body. Over the last decade or so I’ve built up very slowly from walking and basic functional bodyweight exercises to long distance running, weightlifting and even getting back to doing classes at the gym.

I wanted to create this space as a community where people who are interested in training with EDS can come together to support each other on our own journey. Many communities I’m in relating to EDS focus more on dwelling on the negative rather than working with what you have and trying to keep moving forward - that’s what I want to see from this space.

Sure, we all have off days, but the important thing is seeing those in the big picture and keeping on keeping on, in whatever way is possible for us at that time.

I live in Ipswich, UK and train at a gym nearby. Currently I’m working towards my first ever multi-sport event, a Duathlon in December. Last June I did my second ultramarathon where I managed to cover 50 miles over 24 hours, which was pretty awesome!

My day job involves leading a large open source project so I’m mostly at the computer herding cats, but in my spare time I like to play the flute and piano, and I’m training for ordination as a Buddhist within the Triratna tradition.

Looking forward to meeting you all!
